Kin Hana is the drone-folk project of Hudson Valley songwriter and guitarist Aaron Carroll Hodges. His music draws from the intimacy and directness of folk, opening into darker, more atmospheric territory through ghostly strings, layered harmonies, synths, feedback, and distortion. Across his recordings, Hodges balances spare, solitary arrangements with moments of weight and expansiveness, creating songs that feel both deeply personal and unsettled by the world around them. His third full-length album, Howling World, brings these elements together in a collection of songs suspended somewhere between solitude and apocalypse.
Written largely in the aftermath of 2020, Howling World took shape as a stark, stripped-down record in the spirit of Nick Drake’s Pink Moon, then gradually expanded into something more lush and cinematic.
The title track was inspired by René Magritte’s Young Girl Eating a Bird, its strange image of a girl turning away from the world even as she devours it, while “Earthrise” takes its name and perspective from the landmark NASA photograph of Earth above the lunar horizon. Across the record, the personal keeps colliding with a world that feels at once transcendent, mysterious and capable of howling back.
Recorded largely in living rooms in the Catskills, the album moves between restraint and scale, pairing private songs with moments of dread, wonder and release. That tension reaches its fullest expression on the penultimate piece, “Shōmetsu / Kodō,” where the arrangements open into a vast, slow-moving surge of guitars, drums and horns.
